The next evening, I dressed with care, sticking to casual wear because I wasn’t sure what clothing Lily had in her closet. I carried my coat over my arms as I knocked on her door.

“Come in, Sebastian.” She was walking around the corner of her desk. “I don’t know why you bother knocking. You should just come in.”

“They are your rooms. I would never be so bold…” I closed the door behind me and walked directly toward her. I pulled her into my arms and kissed her.

“Oh…okay.” She smiled as her hands fisted the wool of my sweater.

I stepped away and glanced at her feet. She was again wearing thick socks. “Do you have boots?” It was a cold night.

“Boots?” She, too, glanced at her feet.

“I thought we would go out tonight.”

“Out?”

I’d surprised her. Her puzzled expression was adorable. “Go into town, have dinner, walk about—if you aren’t too cold,” I explained. “You should bring your camera in case you see something interesting.” I was rather proud of myself for adding that last part.

“Like on a date?” Her voice ended on a high note.

“Yes.” I nodded and looked at her feet again. “About the boots…?”

“Yes, I have some.” She stepped away from me and turned to go to her bedroom. At the doorway, she paused and turned back to me. “I don’t have any nice clothes.” She tugged on the purple cardigan she was wearing. “Is this okay?”

“You look beautiful.”

She turned and disappeared into her room.

I heard a series of thuds, then the sound of water running. While I waited, I pulled out my phone and checked the menu for the two restaurants I had in mind. Lily was not an adventurous eater. She didn’t like heavy sauces, and I had noticed she was not a fan of vegetables.

“I’m ready.” She carried her wool coat over her arm. “I couldn’t find my gloves, so it took a minute.”

I knew the extra “minute” had been spent freshening her make-up. Her eyes were now lined in violet, and her lips were glossy. “During the drive, I’ll tell you about my two favorite restaurants.” I held out my hands for her coat.

“Whatever you choose, I know I’ll like it.” She turned, and I helped her on with her coat.

“Grab your camera gear.” After she gathered a black bag, I took it from her and hung it from my shoulder.

In the garage, I opened the metal door to the key box. The roads were clear, so I decided on a sedan instead of an SUV. I took her hand again and walked through the garage to the classic Mercedes.

“Is it just the two of us?” she asked as I opened the passenger door for her.

“Yes.” I waited until she had settled into her seat then closed the door.

Once I had the engine started, she asked, “Do you drive often?”

“It depends.” I put the car in gear, and we pulled out of the parking space. “In some cities, it is easier to rely on a driver because parking is difficult.
